I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of your
despatch No. 6 of the 24th ultimo with reference to Chinese
born in Hongkong of parents who are subjects of China.
No person of Chinese extraction is registered at this
Consulate unless he produces a Certificate of Eritish
Nationality from a Colonial Government or a Passport from
His Majesty's Consular authorities in Siam. The only case
in the last few years of a person of Chinese descent being
registered on the authority of a certificate of birth
only is Joseph Ahwane, the illegitimate son of a lauri-
tian woman and a Chinese man, who was registered here as
a British protected person in 1911 and 1912 on the sole
authority of a l'auritius certificate of birth. Since 1912
he has not appeared at this Consulate to rene" his regis-
tration and his birth certificate is on file in this office.
The practice I observe with regard to the registration
of all British subjects of Chinese origin is that they
